What Carving Tools Should I Buy as a Beginner?

Hey everyone! I'm a beginner woodworker trying to dive into carving, particularly making spoons and small bowls. I've got a nice collection of general hand tools like a draw knife, hatchet, and chisels, but I'm lacking specific carving tools. Currently, I've been using a single bevel Japanese knife and a 1/2 gouge, but I'm finding the knife challenging and the gouge isn't great for deeper bowls. I'm considering getting an all-purpose knife along with either a hook knife or a bent gouge. My main dilemma is whether to buy Beaver Craft tools or spend a bit more on Mora, Narex, or Flexcut. I've heard mixed reviews on Beaver Craft—some swear by them while others have had bad experiences. Can anyone offer advice? I'm in Canada and would love to keep my spending around $50, but I'm open to $100 if it's worth it!

Definitely go for Mora! They offer great value for the price and are well-loved in the carving community. You might also want to check if Lee Valley has the Robin Wood hook knife because that, along with a Mora 106, a small saw, and a hatchet, should cover your needs for spoon carving pretty well!

I agree! Mora knives are typically reliable and hold up well for various carving projects.

Honestly, I recommend sticking with Mora or Flexcut. I've had a bad experience with Beaver Craft—my tools didn't hold an edge at all. If you're looking for top-notch tools, check out Deep Woods Ventures too; they've got some stellar options that might be worth the investment!

I've heard good things about Deep Woods Ventures! Just make sure to check out reviews before making a decision.
