What Could Be Causing These Stains on My Ceiling?

A few months ago, my wife noticed some strange spots on our ceiling, and we're not sure how long they've been there. We bought the house about a year ago, but she thinks these stains might have developed after we moved in. They're located on the first floor, and the weird thing is, there's no plumbing nearby. Anyone have any ideas about what could be causing these stains?

It sounds like you might have some condensation occurring, especially if there are HVAC ducts in that area. During the hotter months, moisture can accumulate and cause water to drip down. You might want to check that out first.

I had a similar issue before, and it ended up being duct condensation. It was pretty bad, and I had to replace a lot of drywall in the affected area. If it’s duct work related, you might want to address it sooner rather than later!

Honestly, it seems like a leak to me. I recommend getting a moisture meter to see if the area is damp. Even if you don't see plumbing directly above, it could be water running down from somewhere else, like rain or someone spilling something on the floors above. Just be careful before making any holes in your ceiling!

Thanks for the advice! I’ll definitely look into getting a moisture meter to check it out before doing anything drastic.
