What could have caused my watermelon seedlings to get crushed?

I just transplanted my watermelon seedlings into the garden yesterday, marking their spots with a circle of rocks. But when I checked on them today, I found the soil disturbed and the seedlings completely crushed, roots exposed and everything. What on earth could have happened?

That sounds really frustrating! It might be animals like squirrels or mice digging around, but it could also be something more suspicious. I had a similar issue where my plants were dug up by my dog! I usually cut the bottom off plastic bottles and place them around the plants until they’re stronger. Good luck, I hope you can try again soon!

It definitely sounds like something more deliberate, though. The rocks being disturbed on just one side makes it feel like someone kicked it.

Ugh, I totally get that! My dog decided to uproot all my freshly planted flowers the other day. It's frustrating when animals or even humans mess with your garden. Could it be neighborhood kids? I know sometimes cats like to hang out in gardens too, but this sounds more like a person got involved.

Yeah, that’s possible! Just one side being disturbed does seem off. You might want to keep an eye on it in case someone is messing around.
