What DIY Home Improvement Should I Tackle First?

I've been painting my home repeatedly but still feel like it lacks that special touch compared to others. I had a lightbulb moment and realized that it's probably because I'm missing trim. I have these beautiful 6-panel oak doors, but my honey oak ranch-style trim is pretty beat up—dents, chunks missing, and covered in old paint and tape from years of my painting adventures. The flooring's been updated recently, but the mismatched tones are a real eyesore. I'm planning to paint instead of matching wood tones.

On top of that, I've got those infamous popcorn ceilings without any crown molding, which isn't even a good combo right? As someone who loves DIY projects, I'm keen on fixing all these issues. I want to add some nice 4¼" colonial baseboards—I'm aiming for poplar but might go with pine to save some bucks initially. If they need replacing later, I'll go for sturdier poplar then.

I'm also looking to remove some wall decor and add paneling—I'm ready to experiment to see what looks best. As for that ceiling, it's not painted but looks so stained and awful I'm tempted to just paint over it! If you were in my shoes, where would you start? What do you think would have the biggest visual impact?

My advice? Do not paint the ceiling! It can complicate things when it's time to remove it later on. I think tackling the ceiling first is actually a solid option—getting that done will feel like a weight lifted! You could also paint the existing trim for a quick win, and then gradually address the other elements later if needed.

Yeah, the ceiling is the one I'm most apprehensive about! I agree though, just scrape it down and toss some fresh white paint over the trim; I can worry about the rest later!

Before diving into a project, I'd definitely recommend sharing some pictures—what I visualize might differ from what you've described! Trim really does finish off a room nicely, especially if you're dealing with small spaces. If your rooms feel a bit cramped, consider opening up the layout; that might give it a modern feel. Also, think about your ceiling height as it could impact the type of moulding you can use. Starting with the trim could definitely elevate the overall look of your home.
