What DIY Projects Should I Tackle as a New Homeowner?

I've just bought my first house and while I'm not planning any major renovations right now, there are definitely some smaller projects on my to-do list. I'm a 31-year-old woman who loves learning new skills and working with my hands. However, I'm a bit nervous about taking on too much and potentially making costly mistakes. I'm curious, outside of big plumbing and electrical jobs, what DIY projects should I definitely avoid doing myself? If you were giving advice to your daughter, what would you say she should steer clear of handling on her own?

Honestly, it sounds like you can do quite a bit! Just watch a lot of DIY videos before jumping into any big job; there's so much you can learn. For example, flooring and painting are totally feasible as long as you take your time. Only stay away from anything that requires a permit—those are best left for professionals.

I would strongly recommend that you avoid any projects involving load-bearing walls—it’s crucial to know which walls are safe to remove. If you mess up here, it could lead to serious structural issues. Focus on tasks like painting, flooring, and non-load-bearing walls if you're feeling confident!

Electrical work can be tricky, so only tackle it if you’re completely sure the power is off, and it's best to label your breaker box for future reference. As for plumbing, stick to the basics like toilet replacements, but call in a plumber if you run into any pipe hookups. Always be safe and don't take unnecessary risks!

Thanks for the tips! I'll definitely stick to the safer stuff and call in the pros when needed.

Totally agree! It's better to be safe than sorry when it comes to electrical and plumbing.
