Hey everyone! I'm looking to create a wooden shelf riser with dimensions of 6 inches by 2 feet and a height of 6 inches. However, I have no prior woodworking experience. I've got a hammer, screwdriver, nails, and screws, and I can get supplies from Home Depot or Lowe's. I'm a bit lost about what type of wood to purchase, especially since prices vary greatly from $2 to $100+. Ideally, I want to keep my budget under $20. Any tips on what I should do?

I've made a few things but I'm not totally sure what you mean by a 'shelf riser.' Could you describe more or even share what it's for? That would help us give better advice!
You're definitely going to need a saw, which you can find for about $15 at Home Depot. If you're okay with a width of 5-1/2 inches instead of 6, you can grab a 1x6x6 ft piece of pine for around $8. Just cut two pieces at 6 inches and one piece at 2 feet, then screw or nail them together. Remember, cutting straight with a handsaw can be tricky if you've never done it before, so take your time!
Thanks for the info! Do you know if Home Depot offers cutting services? I can't drive, so I need to take everything on the bus.

Sure, it's just a platform insert for an existing shelf, kind of like this one from IKEA.
