I'm interested in building some floating shelves specifically for my cats to enjoy. I'm not sure where to begin, especially when it comes to the right tools and what type of wood would be best. Any advice would be really appreciated!

I suggest starting with the type of brackets for your shelves since that’ll dictate their depth. If you're okay with seeing them, L-shaped brackets are an option. If you want them hidden, you'll need some deep drill bits. You could also attach a board to the wall and create a box for the shelf to sit on—it’ll definitely give a cleaner look.
For cat shelves, plywood works great! You can paint it for a nicer look too. I built some for an alcove using two side battens and a shelf made of 9mm plywood sandwiched around a wooden frame. It slides onto the battens, so there are no visible fixings. I even added lighting to the bottom of mine for a cool effect!
Thank you!!

Here's a project I did using deep drill bits and chisels. L-shaped brackets are what I'm considering too!
