What Does ‘Full Sun’ Mean for Tomato Plants?

I'm new to growing vegetables and just bought some tomatoes from the grocery store. I read that tomatoes need full sun, but I'm unsure if my porch is a suitable spot. I have a covered porch, but the sun shines on them directly. Can someone clarify what 'full sun' means? Also, any tips on growing tomatoes would be greatly appreciated! ?

'Full sun' means your plants should get at least 6 hours of direct sunlight each day. It's best if this sunlight is without any obstruction, like trees or buildings. So, if your porch blocks some light, that might not count as full sun for your tomatoes. But don't worry too much—6 hours can be spread out throughout the day, and afternoon sun is generally stronger than the morning sun, so try to keep an eye on that!

Thanks for the clarification! That's really helpful.

Good point about the afternoon sun being more intense! Just be sure to average out those hours throughout the day.

Just to add, you don't have to provide 6 uninterrupted hours—it's more about that total throughout the day. Bright shade can still work as long as they're getting that light exposure! And remember to keep them well-watered.

You're on the right track! Full sun means 6+ hours, but being under a porch could mean they’re in bright shade. Your tomatoes might still grow fine there, but ensure they’re getting enough light. Just keep them watered and consider fertilizing them as well—don't forget to enjoy the process!
