I'm looking to fill my planter box on the balcony, but I can't use bagged soil. I'm seeking eco-friendly and healthy alternatives, since I can't make compost myself. Any suggestions?

You can create a simple soil mix that works well for various types of plants. I usually combine 2 parts potting compost, 2 parts coco coir, and 1 part perlite. This mix is versatile and supports healthy growth!

Consider checking out local compost programs. They often have fast solutions for filling your planter. If you need immediate soil, you might want to search for compost instead of relying solely on it, as it’s more of a supplement to regular soil.

Try this mix: 7 parts coco coir, 2 parts perlite, and 1 part vermiculite. It’s great for drainage, but remember to add some nutrients soon after the plants start sprouting, since it can be a bit too light without any compost or castings.

Sounds like a seed starter mix! Just keep in mind that you’ll need to feed the plants with nutrients afterward.

What about adding any organic fertilizers to boost it? Just curious!

Have you heard of hugelkulture? You could fill the base of your planter with branches, and layer it with old newspapers or non-shiny flyers. It’s a neat way to reuse materials and enrich your soil, but it's best suited for larger areas.

I think that's more effective for ground gardens, though. It might not work as well in a raised planter.
