I have a flower bed that faces east, right alongside my house, and I'm excited to plant some fruits and veggies there because the space and soil look great. However, my husband is a bit concerned that the root systems might grow under the foundation and create cracks in the cement. I'm planning to stick with annuals and not plant any root vegetables. Is this something I should genuinely worry about, or is my space safe for planting? Any recommendations would be helpful, or should I avoid using that bed altogether?

No need to stress about it! Root systems from annual fruits and veggies are usually not a concern. The only thing you might want to consider is keeping an eye on drainage to ensure water flows away from your house. That's the key here!

Thanks! That’s what I was thinking too. I believe my husband is just picturing tree roots, which can be more of a problem. We already have an irrigation system set up and so far, moisture hasn’t been an issue; this is my first summer here!
