What Home Projects Should I Prioritize Before Moving into My First House?

Hey everyone! As a first-time homebuyer, I'm feeling pretty overwhelmed by all the things I could do in my new 4-bedroom home before really settling in. I'd love to hear your thoughts on which projects I should tackle right away and which ones I can save for later. For instance, I'm considering a DIY epoxy for the garage floor and repainting the interior to a nice neutral white since the walls are a bit scuffed up. I'm also thinking about replacing the kitchen backsplash, addressing the cabinets, power washing the deck, and doing some minor repairs identified in the inspection. What do you think are the must-do projects before moving in? Also, any advice on maintenance tasks that I shouldn't overlook? I want to make the best use of my time and resources!

Try to knock out as much of the messy or dirty work before your stuff fills the place up. Things like updating electrical wiring, adding outlets, or even address HVAC needs can make your life so much easier in the long run. For now, painting, redoing flooring, or sprucing up the bathrooms are good starters, but anything major involving kitchen changes should wait a while—you don’t want to rush those projects!

Great points! Why is it best to wait on kitchen renovations though? I'm tempted to change things around as soon as I can.

Honestly, if your new home is already livable, I’d suggest just moving in without taking on too much right away. You can take some time to see what needs immediate attention versus what can wait. After settling in, you might realize some things you initially thought were a priority aren't as big of a deal as you thought. Plus, congratulations on your new place!

I recommend focusing on painting and cleaning before you move in. It’s so much easier to paint when the rooms are empty! Also, definitely clean all the appliances and garage thoroughly. I’d suggest prioritizing any repairs related to water issues, as they can cause bigger problems later. After you’re settled, you can take your time on things like bedroom paintings and minor repairs. Just remember, take it slow!
