What is that brown goo on the wall in my potential new apartment?

I'm checking out a new apartment and noticed some brown goo stuck to the wall between the wall and a cabinet. The handyman mentioned it might be wallpaper glue. Since the previous tenants have been living there for over 30 years and there's wallpaper that was painted over poorly, I wanted to verify if that's really the case or if there's something else going on. Thanks for any insights!

That brown goo could definitely be some kind of wallpaper glue, but it’s also possible it’s accumulated leftovers from years of dust, cooking vapors, or even wood tannins if the cabinet is wooden. Just a mix of everything! It’s always good to have a closer look to see if it’s something you can clean off easily or if it looks like a bigger issue.

Yeah, I figured it might be something like that. Just didn’t want to get tricked into thinking it’s harmless!

Ugh, could be glue, nicotine stains, or just years of grime. If it’s in the laundry room, there's probably more oil and dust buildup from laundry activities. Just make sure it doesn’t smell weird or have a texture that makes you think twice!

Good point, I’ll definitely check for any odd smells. Gross to think about all that stuff stuck there!
