Hey folks! I'm just getting into woodworking and looking for recommendations on jigs that would be great for beginners. I'm currently eyeing a dovetail jig because I want to build a box to store my father's ashes. However, I'm open to exploring other jigs that might be useful. I've already invested about $2k in tools over the last couple of years but I haven't done much beyond making a few three-picket planters. Lastly, I'm not really looking to build my own jigs at this stage. Any advice?

I’d suggest holding off on buying any jigs until you have a specific project in mind. I learned the hard way by purchasing a lot of gear that just ended up gathering dust because I didn’t really need it. But if you're into collecting tools, then go for it!
I’ve heard that dovetail jigs can be a pain to learn unless you’re making a lot of dovetails for cabinets. I just tried cutting dovetails by hand, and it’s definitely worth mastering that skill before jumping into jigs. If you must buy a jig, a tapering jig or a shooting board could be good choices. Just make sure to think about what you really need for your project!
Most of my jigs are homemade because they fit my needs better. Unless you’re doing batch work, pre-made jigs often aren’t worth it. Moving from simple planters to dovetails is a big jump, so practice a lot. If you have to buy something, consider Rob Cosman’s dovetail marking jig; it's quite handy!
Your choice of jig really depends on how you like to work. If you prefer hand tools or power tools, different jigs will assist you differently. For a workbench setup, consider some clamps or bench dogs to keep your pieces steady. If you go for a dovetail jig, know that while they're quick, they can be a hassle to set up for smaller projects. A handsaw dovetail guide could be a quick way to learn the technique without much setup. So, think about your exact needs with the projects you plan to tackle!
Jigs are usually project-specific. When I started, I found a pocket hole jig super helpful. Just a tip: you might want to shop around since Kreg jigs can be a bit pricey on some sites. Additionally, if you’re planning to make dowel holes, a doweling jig can be really useful. And keep in mind, you can also make a lot of jigs yourself, which is good practice too!
