What Low-Maintenance Plants Can I Grow Along My Retaining Wall?

I'm looking to spruce up my retaining wall this autumn. It's about 30 meters long and 1 meter wide. Last year, I planted flowers, but the upkeep with weeding became overwhelming! I'm seeking suggestions for plants that are both visually appealing and low maintenance. I've laid down weed matting and added mulch, so I'm ready to plant. I was considering blueberries, but they can be pricey and I'm not too familiar with their growing needs. Ideally, the plants I choose should be hardy against frost and drought. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated! 😊

While I can't suggest specific plants from NZ, I highly recommend looking for tough, low-growing shrubs. I have sumac and junipers along my retaining wall, and they’ve worked wonders. They grow densely enough to choke out weeds, provide year-round interest, and even feed birds. Plus, their roots help to hold the slope behind the wall steady. Look for some native shrubs that thrive in your area!

Awesome, thanks! I really need something to tackle that slope behind. Grass is taking over! 😂

Even though I'm not familiar with your local plants, one great tip is to plant things closely together. This way, you fill in empty spots with annuals in spring, which not only looks beautiful but also reduces the chances for weeds to thrive. My ornamental garden barely has any weeds because I keep it full! Plus, tackling them in the spring helps control any growth before summer rolls in. Good luck!

Thanks for the suggestion! I'm definitely going to try that approach. 🙏
