What Makes Planer Blades So Pricey?

Hey everyone! I'm in the market for new blades for my Dewalt 734 planer and I've noticed prices on Amazon vary quite a bit, from about $25 to $55. I'm curious if there's a significant difference in quality or sharpness among these options. I understand that different manufacturers set different prices, but this range is quite dramatic. I'm open to spending more if it means getting sharper blades that will last longer. Has anyone had experience buying planer blades on Amazon? Any recommendations? By the way, I'm planning to use these blades for a project involving an end grain cutting board, so I really want to avoid blowouts. I already have some techniques in mind to minimize risks, but any advice on blade quality would be greatly appreciated!

The price difference mainly comes down to the quality of the steel used in the blades. Cheaper blades tend to dull much faster, which can be a real hassle. Dewalt blades strike a good balance between cost and quality; I usually prefer them over cheaper alternatives just because they last longer. In woodworking, you often find that you get what you pay for—sometimes even less than what you expect. So, it’s worth considering investing a little more for a decent set of blades. Good luck with your project! Don’t forget to share updates on how it goes!
