What Makes Someone Good at Caring for Plants?

I just got back from a 3-month trip where I left my plants in the care of someone I thought would do a good job. I even gave them detailed instructions! But unfortunately, many of my plants ended up looking worse for wear. This got me thinking – what actually makes someone good at taking care of plants? Some of us seem to have a natural talent for it, while others genuinely want to help but struggle. Is it just innate ability, or are there specific qualities and skills that help a person keep houseplants alive and thriving?

I think the key is mostly observation. You really need to get to know your plants and pick up on their signals. It’s less about following strict schedules and more about connecting with them and figuring out what they need when. Understanding their needs comes enough with time and attention, so don’t overthink it!

Totally agree! Noticing the little changes is essential – like when it's time to water or give a little extra love. I've found that sticking to a rigid routine or relying on an app often backfires because everyone’s plants have different needs. Honestly, killing a couple of plants is just part of the learning curve. ?

Exactly! Daily check-ins on your plants can help. I let mine tell me when they’re ready for water instead of sticking to a strict schedule. Like, I recently realized one of my alocasias was root bound just because I kept observing its drooping leaves despite everything else looking fine. It's all about being responsive.

You gotta think of it as a relationship rather than just care. It requires love and attention. If someone isn’t genuinely interested, they may not do the best job with a plant. Maybe the person caring for your plants didn’t feel a connection and didn’t put in the effort needed.

Absolutely! It’s all about that personal connection. If he didn’t own the plants, he may not have taken responsibility for their care. When someone is invested in a plant as their own, they tend to do much better.

I really love plants but for some reason, I just can't seem to keep them alive. I know the basics like checking light and water levels, but they still don’t thrive for me. It’s so frustrating! I always tell plant owners to pick someone else to care for their babies if they're going away. F620;

It really isn’t all your fault! A lot of care labels are vague or misleading. Like, they often say a plant prefers 'low light' but don’t explain it well. Most plants actually want as much light as possible, so positioning them near a sunny window can really make a difference.

So true, don’t be too hard on yourself! The info on labels often just isn’t accurate. I used to follow instructions perfectly, and my plants still failed. It took me a lot of trial and error and research to really understand what they need.
