What Material Could My Garage Ceiling Be Made Of?

I recently purchased a house from 1958, and I've noticed that the garage ceiling seems to be made of some type of plaster or concrete material. Since there are bedrooms located directly above the garage, I'm wondering if this material is fireproof. Does anyone have ideas on what it could be? We're planning to do some plumbing work that requires us to open it up and then fix it back.

It’s likely hard plaster over drywall. If you’re worried about asbestos, it’s a good idea to get a sample taken and analyzed to be safe.

Yeah, I really think getting it tested for asbestos is a must.

My garage is from the 50s too, and I haven't done anything with the ceiling yet. I’d be interested to hear what others have figured out about their garages!

I faced a similar situation when we pulled down a drop ceiling in our garage, which was built around the same time as yours. We encountered a really hard board material too. It was centered around an area with electric wiring, and we haven't tried to cut it or dispose of it yet. Just something to keep in mind!
