So, I was planting a tree line on my front property using a 2-foot auger and didn't think to call 811 because I knew where my water lines were from when I built the house. Turns out, there's a 12-inch water main running 6 feet inside my fence line, just 1 foot off the property line, due to an easement from when the lot was empty. I accidentally hit the line, and it gushed for over an hour before the water company showed up and made repairs. They mentioned I should have called 811 and hinted that I might have to cover the bill. They said the repair costs could range widely—from $3,000 to $10,000—but they're supposed to inform me next week about how to proceed. I'm anxious to know if I should brace myself for a $1,000 bill or if it's going to be way more. Anyone have any experience or insights on what I might be looking at?

It really depends on how the water company decides to handle it. If they feel generous, they might not charge you the full amount, but prepare for the worst. A few grand could be just the beginning considering labor and material costs. Also, don't forget to check with your homeowners insurance; they might cover some of it. Just know they might raise your premium if they do address it.
From my experience, even calls to 811 don’t always protect you from costs. I once accidentally hit a gas line and ended up paying around $2,500 for repairs. They typically bill you for the whole labor and equipment use, not just the time they were at your site. I’d say you could be looking at around $5,000 just for off-hours labor, plus the costs for the trucks and any equipment they used. If you're lucky and the main was improperly placed, they might waive the fee, but be prepared for some major expenses.

Good point about the insurance! I’ll definitely check in with them. Hopefully, it won't jack up my rates too much.
