My boyfriend has some larger piercings in his ears and prefers a punk style, so I'm aiming for black or maroon finishes on the jewelry. You might want to try birch wood as it's non-toxic and safe for skin contact. Additionally, oils like linseed or hemp oil can work well. For a darker finish, consider using Indian rosewood or African blackwood; both should give you a nice deep color after oiling them up.
How about using milk paint? It’s been used for ages, super durable, and made from safe ingredients like lime, milk protein, and pigment. I use it on wooden kitchen utensils! You just mix what you need, so there's no waste. Just ensure you buy real powdered milk paint and not the acrylic stuff that's often sold pre-mixed.
Acrylic paint can be great once it's fully cured, and it’s pretty durable too. If you want extra protection, adding a layer of food-safe varnish on top really helps. Why not try torching the wood? I do that with the arm rings I create. It gives a beautiful range of tones from dark brown to almost black, plus it protects the wood underneath and makes it slightly water-resistant.
