I recently had beautiful wall-to-wall bookshelves built and installed, and while I'm thrilled with the outcome, the carpenter used an oil-based primer beforehand, which is leaving a harsh smell in the room. With a newborn at home, I'm concerned about the fumes and have sealed off the room with plastic to avoid exposure. I need your advice on what kind of paint I can apply as the final coat that won't have a strong smell and will allow me to safely use the room again. I'd like to steer clear of oil-based paints for the topcoat as I want to minimize any lingering odors. Thanks for your help!

I totally get your concerns with the baby! Honestly, oil-based paint is top-notch in quality, but I know it's not for everyone, especially with the fumes. Some people actually like the smell, but if oil's not an option for you anymore, try looking for low-VOC latex paints. They tend to have way less odor and are generally safer for indoor use. Just make sure to still ventilate the area well after you paint.
You might have to use an oil-based primer first if you want to go that route, or switch to a shellac-based primer so you can use latex paint over it. But if the room is sealed tight, make sure to ventilate it to help get rid of those smells. Open a window or set up a fan for better airflow!
