What Plants Can I Grow in NY to Attract Butterflies?

I'm looking to create a butterfly-friendly area in my garden to help support butterfly and insect populations. I've seen some white butterflies around, but I'd love to attract more colorful varieties. I've thought about planting a butterfly bush, but I've heard it's not native. What native plants should I consider? Any recommendations?

Another great mix includes purple coneflowers, black-eyed Susans, dill, and yarrow. I've got these in my garden on Long Island and the butterflies really love them! Rose mallow is also worth considering, as it's a favorite among these winged beauties.

Don’t forget to think about what caterpillars need as well! Some plants like goldenrod can host caterpillars and also attract butterflies and bees. It's a great late summer source for them. But, just a heads up, goldenrod can get a bit aggressive. Instead of a butterfly bush, consider options like button bush or summersweet — both are native and quite lovely! You can also look up local guides for even more native plants to support butterflies.

You should definitely consider planting swamp milkweed and butterfly milkweed! Other great options are bee balm, agastache, echinacea, and asters. If you've got space, Joe Pye weed is also a fantastic choice! Make sure to check with a local nursery, as they can suggest plants that work well in your specific environment, especially if you have sunny spots in your garden.
