I'm gearing up to replace my cedar bevel siding this summer while also putting in new windows. I recently checked the kitchen area and it seems like there's only blue foam board attached to the 2x4 walls with a vapor barrier on the inside between the drywall and the 2x4s. Given this setup, are there any recommendations for improvements or steps I should take before I get the siding back up? Also, please note I'm in Zone 5b. Thanks for your help!

Since you already have a vapor barrier, adding more air or vapor barriers isn't advisable as it could lead to moisture issues and mold. For your climate zone (5b), having the blue foam board along with the vapor barrier should work well. Just make sure your insulation is adequate—generally, you’ll want at least 1 inch of continuous insulation outside, but 2 inches would be even better. Also, don't forget to seal any penetrations in the wall to prevent air leaks!
If your home is indeed a second floor addition, you'll want to confirm that there’s adequate sheeting or bracing. Since you seem unsure if there’s any present, it might be worth investigating before you start with the siding. Pay close attention to air infiltration as well; sealing those gaps can be just as important as insulation!
Make sure you check for structural integrity before putting up the siding. It's important there’s some sort of structural sheeting or lateral bracing under that foam board. If your house was originally built with a two-story structure, it should have some kind of support system in place. You might not have found it when you cut the hole for the vent, but it's crucial to ensure everything is stable before proceeding.
