What Safe Chemicals Can I Use for Clogged PVC and Cast Iron Pipes?

I'm dealing with persistent clogs in the drains of my old house, which features a mix of Cast Iron and PVC pipes. The interior wall pipes are mostly Cast Iron, and while some connections have been updated to PVC, they still get clogged fairly often. I can get them clear for a while, but any little thing, like food scraps or dishwashing debris, seems to lead to new blockages. I'm looking for safe chemicals that I can pour down the drains or let sit for extended periods. Also, I'm curious if the clogs could be caused by mineral scaling or corrosion inside the Cast Iron pipes. I've tried various methods including plunging, baking soda and vinegar, and using a snake, but I still encounter hard blockages that sound like concrete. Any advice or suggestions for DIY solutions would be greatly appreciated!

Without seeing the exact situation, it’s hard to make a precise recommendation. If multiple drains back up at once, the issue could be further down the line. A sewer scope rental is a solid idea—you can usually rent one from a local tool place for around $200. If it’s a small blockage, you could look into using a root killer, but for $295, a plumber can scope the main line, which might save you a lot of hassle in the long run!

Great advice! Thanks for the suggestions—I’ll consider both the rental and the plumber option.

It sounds like you're dealing with mineral buildup in your cast iron pipes. While chemicals can help, I’d recommend investing in a descaler tool for a more effective solution. You might also want to use a camera scope to see the exact condition of your pipes. It can really show you what’s going on and help direct your efforts. If the buildup is significant, you might consider calling in a plumber for a quick fix since they have the tools to handle this efficiently.

Thanks for the insight! I'll look into getting a descaler and maybe a camera for a better view.
