What Safety Gear Do You Use for Woodcarving?

I'm just starting out with woodcarving and I'm curious about the best ways to protect my hands and fingers while I work. I've been thinking about gloves, cut resistant tape, thumb protectors, or even thimbles. Has anyone tried cut resistant tape? I'm considering buying it, but I want to avoid wasting money if it's just going to be a hassle. Are gloves a better option?

I highly recommend getting ANSI cut resistant level 9 gloves that are 21 gauge thick—they're great for whittling but remember, they're not safe with power tools!

Great tip! And don't forget about using chisels and a carver's benchhook for added safety.

I use cut resistant gloves on the hand that holds the project, plus cut resistant tape on my thumb for extra protection. Just make sure your gloves have a rubber grip and fit snugly. It might take a bit to get used to them, but trust me, they can really save you—I've got a scar on my thumb from when I wasn't wearing my gloves!
