What Should an Invoice from My Contractor Look Like?

I've got some serious repairs happening in my condo after a massive flood, and here's the catch: the general contractor started the work before I officially received an invoice. This invoice he sent over is really just a general overview of what's going to be done. Can anyone tell me what a proper invoice or bill should look like? Shouldn't it provide specific details about the work, especially since the electrical system is being brought up to code? I feel like I should have a clearer idea of what exactly is being done.

Honestly, you should never let work start without seeing a detailed scope and pricing first. This leaves you open to a huge surprise bill down the line! Make sure you get everything in writing before any more work goes on. It’s always good to have the specifics laid out so you know what you’re paying for.

Totally agree! In this situation, I'd definitely recommend getting a written contract that outlines what’s included in the job. You should also consider asking for a conditional waiver for initial payments and a lien waiver upon job completion to protect yourself.
