What Should I Do About Black Mold in My Toilet Tank?

Hey everyone! I just moved into a new apartment about a month ago, and when I went to replace the toilet flusher, I discovered a horrible smell and a ton of black, white, and red mold in the tank. I'm wondering what the best way to clean this up is. Should I also let my apartment management know about this? Any tips would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance!

Honestly, using vinegar is a solid alternative to bleach for cleaning mold, as it can kill the roots where mold grows. Regular cleaning is vital to prevent spores from spreading elsewhere in your apartment, as I learned the hard way in my last place. If you do cleaning, make sure you’re wearing an N-95 mask and have an air purifier running to clear out the spores. It’s a big task, but protecting your health is top priority! And don’t forget to notify your management; they need to know about this issue for sure!

I really appreciate the advice! I’ll definitely inform management as well.

I’d recommend trying hydrogen peroxide instead! Some say bleach isn't as effective as many think, and it can harm the toilet's insides. Here's what I suggest: drain the tank, spray it down with peroxide, let it sit for a bit, rinse, and then follow up with some citric acid to tackle those stains. Just fill the tank with extra water while you’re at it, maybe even leave the citric acid in overnight. It should definitely improve the look of it!

First off, not all black mold is actually harmful black mold, but it's definitely not something you want lurking in your toilet tank! A lot of users suggest using bleach for cleaning, so you could spray that in there and scrub it up. Be cautious though, since the apartment might have been empty for a while, mold can grow easily in those conditions. Just don't overdo it with the bleach—too much can damage the toilet parts which you'll need to keep functioning!

Just be careful with that bleach! You don’t want to wreck the flapper and float.
