I'm working on converting an empty space into storage, but I discovered black mold on some of the studs. This area is part of the return air vent's path, so we've likely been inhaling this stuff without even realizing it. Should I consider replacing the affected studs, treat them in place, or do something else? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Yeah, definitely evaluate how extensive the mold is. Since you’re in California, the humidity might be low, which is good, but if any water leaks are present, they need fixing first. Treating might work if there's just a little bit. If it's widespread, replacing could give you peace of mind. Good luck with everything!
First off, you definitely want to handle that mold situation ASAP, especially since it's near your air vent! If you can, check the humidity levels in that space; without addressing any moisture problems, the mold will probably just come back. If the studs are only slightly affected, you might be able to treat the area with a mold cleaner instead of full replacement. But if it’s pretty bad, replacing them could be the safer bet. Better to be safe than sorry!
Agreed! Mold can be a serious health hazard, especially in enclosed spaces. You might also want to look into improving ventilation to prevent future growth.

Thanks for the input! I've noticed it’s mostly confined to a few studs, but I’ll definitely keep an eye out for any leaks.
