I recently had a conversation with my backyard neighbor, who I've never really interacted with before. They approached me with a proposal to replace our shared wood fence with a 6' black chain link fence that has privacy slats. Apparently, the neighbors on both sides are on board with this change, and one even put down a deposit. But when I asked what issues they had with our existing fence, they couldn't point out any problems. We currently have a sturdy white wood fence that looks nice and fits the aesthetic of our home and neighborhood, so I don't see a reason to change it. Although my neighbor is willing to cover the costs for the new fence, we're not interested in losing the privacy and beauty that our wooden fence provides. I feel it's reasonable to suggest they either paint their side of the existing fence or build the new fence solely on their property line. How should I handle this situation?

Honestly, your best bet might be to let them know you're happy with the current wood fence and aren't interested in replacing it. Since they own the chain link option, they can definitely build it on their side of the property line without disrupting your fence.

LOL, just imagine how thick the plants will get between those fences!
