What Should I Do About My Unvented Vaulted Ceiling?

I'm converting my garage into a workspace in Pasadena, California, and I opted for a vaulted ceiling during the renovation. I hired a handyman, who I later found out is unlicensed, and he installed the vaulted ceiling without any vents. Now, I'm worried since I read that this could lead to mold and that it's not up to code. I'm considering a few options: Tell him to redo it with a drop-down ceiling and gable vent, keep it as is for a couple of years, find a licensed contractor to fix it, or even add a flat ceiling without tearing out the vaulted design. I'm feeling lost because I've already paid him $4,000 out of $7,000 for the work done so far. Can anyone provide some guidance?

Hey there! Since you haven't painted the ceiling yet, it might be possible to add vents without tearing everything out. You could cut small holes in the drywall to install some vents and then patch them up after. I imagine it would cost a bit for labor, but it shouldn't require a full redo of the ceiling. Definitely worth discussing with your handyman!

Thanks for the suggestion! I'll definitely ask him about this workaround.

It sounds like you're dealing with a 'hot roof' situation, which is actually fairly common. A hot roof relies on your HVAC to circulate air, making it efficient. However, many do use spray foam insulation, whereas it seems like yours just has batts. It's essential to ensure proper airflow to avoid condensation and mold, so keep that in mind! If your home is tightly sealed, it might not be an issue, but it's still important to monitor the situation.

I appreciate the info! I'm wondering if I should change out the insulation or do something else about that.
