What Should I Do About These Damaged Baseboards in My New Home?

I recently moved into a new home and noticed some damage to the baseboards after having my carpet replaced. I'm unsure if the damage was there before or if it occurred during the installation. Can these baseboards be repaired, or do they need to be replaced? Here's a [photo of the issue](https://imgur.com/a/nsratln) for reference.

The damage might have happened during the carpet replacement. It sounds like the installers either cut the baseboards incorrectly or forced the carpet in too tightly. It's a good idea to reach out to the installers with those photos—you might be able to get some compensation or at least input on the next steps!

I guess I should have pointed it out sooner! I was a bit overwhelmed with everything. Thanks for the advice!

It looks like your baseboards might be MDF and possibly soaked up some moisture at some point, which can definitely happen due to spills or leaks. Since you're on the second floor, it's less likely a slab issue, but still worth investigating for any moisture problems. Repair might be possible, depending on the extent of the damage!

Yeah, if they’re not too rotted, you could potentially just sand and repaint them. But if they’re really bad, replacing them might be the best option.
