What Should I Do After a Flash Flood in My Basement?

Hey everyone! We just had a severe flash flood here in Illinois, and unfortunately, my basement was affected. Water overflowed into the basement from the window wells and managed to spill over onto the floor. I acted quickly, using towels to soak up the water, and I made sure to wipe down the walls. I've had a fan and dehumidifier running for about 9 hours now, and luckily, there are no visible signs of water damage on the drywall or paint. My question is, should I be worried about this small overflow, or am I doing enough to prevent any long-term issues?

Definitely keep that dehumidifier going, and if it's set to drain into your floor drain, that's even better! It’ll help reduce moisture levels and prevent any mold buildup. Just stay on top of it for a bit longer to be safe!

It's great that you're keeping the area dry! Just continue to maintain good airflow over the wet spots; it can take a while for everything to fully dry. The fact that you don't see any signs of damage is definitely a good sign. Keep an eye out for any weird smells, though—if that happens, it might be time to call in a pro!
