What should I do if a tree service left my yard a mess and didn’t finish the job?

I hired a tree company to clean up downed trees and debris from my new backyard (about half an acre) for $1200. They sent three guys who worked for just four hours, moving some logs in one area, but when they left, the yard was still unwalkable and messy. They claimed they completed the work we discussed, but the agreement I have is vague and doesn't clarify the details. I haven't paid them yet, so what should I do next?

You definitely shouldn’t pay them until they finish the job you actually agreed on. Just let them know, ‘Hey, that’s not what we talked about. I’m open to paying once the job is complete.’ If they aren’t willing to finish, you might have to get another estimate to get the job done and reduce it from your initial quote.

Sounds like they lowballed the job! I wouldn’t pay a cent until they clean up the area properly. You’ve got leverage since you still haven't paid, so use that to renegotiate what they need to finish to get your cash. Just be careful, though; you don’t want to escalate things and have them cause damage on your property.

Seriously, don't pay until they finish the work as agreed. If they push back, consider hiring another crew to give you an estimate for what needs to be done. That way, if it comes to a small claims court situation, you'll have some proof to back you up!
