What should I do if my general contractor scammed me?

I'm really upset because I got scammed by a general contractor called Family Custom Builders. I paid a total of $50k for an extension to my house, making three payments that add up to 30% of the agreed price. These payments were made after signing a contract, and I've paid with bank checks. Now, it's been roughly six months, and they're completely unresponsive to my calls and texts. I have a signed contract and the company's address in Auburn, MA. What steps can I take to try and get my money back?

Make sure you cut ties with this contractor completely. Don’t believe anything they say at this point, and remember, paying 10% for permits is typically not a good practice. That alone raises a red flag!

First off, you should definitely consult a lawyer. They can help by sending a demand letter to the contractor, which may get them to respond, and if not, your lawyer can guide you on whether to pursue a lawsuit. Also, check if the contractor had a bond; that could provide some financial protection in situations like this.

I've been through something similar. My contractor finally replied when I had an attorney send them a letter. It might be your best bet to get them to respond.
