What should I do if my landscaper ghosted me during a project?

I hired a landscaper to install in-ground irrigation in my backyard after being impressed with his previous work in my front yard. I paid him fully and even offered to recommend him to others. Two weeks ago, he began the project, made good progress with his assistant, and promised to return over the holiday weekend. However, he hasn't been seen or heard from since—no responses to texts or calls. He left his tools and equipment scattered across my yard, and I haven't paid for labor yet. Since we only had a verbal agreement and he's unlicensed, what steps can I take to resolve this?

Yeah, if he’s gone off the grid, it could be due to some personal issues. Keep his equipment safe and hold onto your money for now until you know more. You might even want to look for a local who might know him. It’s a tricky situation for sure.

Totally agree—better to be cautious! Hope he’s okay, but you can’t risk losing your investment.

I think the best move right now is to keep his tools safe and stash your payment in a high-yield savings account just in case he returns. Unfortunately, it sounds like he might be in some trouble. Maybe try reaching out to people who know him to see if they have any updates. Better to be safe than sorry!
