I have a tenant who says there's no water coming out anywhere in the house. It sounds like he didn't leave any faucets dripping or open the cabinets to help prevent freezing. He claims the pipes in the garage are insulated. I'm considering whether he should turn off the main water supply. I suggested using space heaters in the garage just in case. Would it be effective to use a hairdryer on the insulated pipes? What other steps can he take before calling a plumber?

Shutting off the water and using a hairdryer on the water mains sounds like a good start. Just keep in mind, if it’s actually frozen at the main, heating things up might not do the trick. Definitely check where the main enters the house as it could be a different spot that needs attention first.
You should definitely call a plumber ASAP! You can’t let this situation linger. It’s your property, and you’re responsible for making sure it’s winter-ready.
Honestly, if your pipes were well-insulated, this wouldn’t be such a big issue. It’s not fair to expect your tenant to manage it all. You should have prepped before the cold weather hit. Just focus on getting a plumber in there now before it turns into a bigger problem.
