What Should I Do If My Wall Is Crumbling While Removing Tile?

Hey everyone! I'm in the midst of a DIY project, removing a tile backsplash from my kitchen, and things have taken a turn for the worse. As I'm peeling off the tiles, the wall behind them is crumbling. I was expecting a solid backing, but it looks like I only have plaster and some brown paper. Shouldn't there be a solid board there? I'm considering cutting out the damaged areas and replacing them with drywall panels. Any advice on how to handle this mishap? It's turning into a bit of a DIY disaster!

Looks like the tiles were set directly onto the drywall, which isn’t uncommon. Just make sure to deal with that crumbling drywall appropriately when you’re replacing it.

So, you have a couple of options. You can either remove the drywall where it’s damaged and patch in new pieces, or use a putty knife and hammer to gently pry the tiles away. Just be careful with whatever method you choose!

You might want to grab a multi-tool and carefully run it across the top of the tile. It should help in pulling everything out cleanly. Just take your time!
