What Should I Do with My Fall Bulbs If It’s Too Warm to Plant?

I just received my hyacinth and daffodil bulbs from Holland Bulb Farms, but I'm concerned about the warm weather we're having here in southern Michigan (zone 6). It's been in the 70s and 80s during the day and only dropping to the 50s and 60s at night. Should I go ahead and plant them now, or is it better to hold off? If I decide to wait, what's the best way to store them until it cools down?

Checking out local resources like MSU's horticulture site can give you the best planting times. I used to live in Kazoo and would often wait to plant until late autumn. Daffodils especially like to be planted after tulips. Just make sure to keep an eye on them, so you don't forget when it's time!

Spring bulbs actually need some time in the cold to thrive. If you decide to wait, just don't neglect them! Many folks wait too long and realize they're still sitting around when the snow hits. Also, if the soil is dry, give them a good drink before planting.

I usually keep my bulbs in a cool dark spot until it's closer to first frost. Since I'm in a similar climate, I’d suggest storing them somewhere like an insulated garage; it keeps them cool without freezing. Better to wait for cooler weather!
