I left for a week and turned off both the water supply and my electric water heater. Now that I'm back, I'm wondering the best way to handle the water that's still in the heater. Should I just turn everything back on and let it sit for 30 minutes to kill any potential bacteria? Or would it be better to run the faucets for several minutes to flush out the old water and replace it with fresh? Any advice would be appreciated!

Honestly, it’s not a huge concern. Once you turn the water heater back on, the heat should kill any bacteria. Plus, you're not showering in cold water from it anyway, so there’s really no big issue with what’s in there.
