What Should I Do With Used Compost After My Tomato Plants?

Asked By GreenThumb_42 On

I'm new to gardening and this is my first year growing tomatoes. After the plants die back, I'll have a bunch of pots filled with what looks like perfectly good compost. I'm wondering what the best way to handle this is. Can I just toss it on my flowerbeds while doing my autumn cleanup? Or should I leave it in the pots for next year? Is there something else I should consider? Thanks for any advice!

Adding the used compost to your flowerbeds is a good option! It’ll give your flowers a nutrient boost. Just be sure not to reuse it for tomatoes next year, as it might not have enough nutrients left for them. Also, if you have a compost heap, throw it in there instead!

That sounds good! I like the idea of using it to enrich the flower beds instead.

Absolutely! Plus, mixing it with new compost can help revive its goodness.

You definitely can spread it out over flower beds. It still has good organic matter, which is beneficial for your plants. I recommend not using it again for tomatoes, but it can work wonders for other types of plants!

Good to know! I have some flower beds that could use that extra boost.

Exactly! It's all about making the most of what you’ve got.

I love mixing my old compost with fresh mulch! It's great for topping off my raised beds or even filling in low spots in my lawn. If you don’t need it for leveling, just spread it over flower beds or add it to your compost bin.

That's such a smart idea! I have some dips in my yard too.

Topping off raised beds sounds like a win-win!
