I'm in the process of planning a 30x50 detached building that will serve as a workshop and multi-purpose garage. I've come up with a list of must-haves like 12-foot wide doors (with at least two of them, or maybe two 16-foot alternatives), an overhead electric hoist track, and open floor space. I need enough height to lift a pickup truck completely. I'm also considering including an upper mezzanine to store materials and household items, plus a platform for the hoist to lift heavy things. Electrical needs include water, sewer, and a 100-amp service with one 220v outlet inside and one outside for welder plugs. The floor needs to have a smooth finish with a slight slope for drainage but should be flat enough to use a 4-post lift. I plan to handle insulation and air sealing myself.
Are there any important features I'm missing? I'm also unsure whether to go with a steel or wood structure, or if I should choose pole style versus stick for wood. I'm curious about proper clearance in front of the garage doors for driving and backing in a pickup truck—there's about 17 feet before it starts sloping down. Should I stick with 16-foot doors for an easier backing experience, especially if I need to accommodate a trailer? I want to think through all possibilities before locking in on a design since I need a strong foundation wall, and I can't just place it anywhere without proper planning.

When building a space like yours, make sure to plan for tech and utility connections. Running fiber optic cables from the house to the workshop is a smart move, as it can give you much better internet access than standard WiFi. Also, having a hot water source and multiple hose bibs for hot and cold water will make cleaning and working much easier. Don’t forget to add floor drains—having a few around is always a plus, especially in a workshop setting.
