I'm planning to remove an old AC unit that was left behind by the previous homeowners. It's currently covered by a deck that I'm taking down. Besides the electrical connections, are there any other important things to drain or check before I take it out?

Make sure you find out how to properly dispose of the unit, especially if there's still Freon inside. It sounds like it might be a few years old, so contact local AC companies for help. They can tell you if any refrigerant is left and arrange for the proper removal.
Before you dive in, check if the AC unit is connected to an air handler with refrigerant lines. You'll need a recovery machine to safely remove the refrigerant. It’s crucial to handle this step properly to avoid environmental fines.
Make sure to turn off the power to the unit at the breaker and ensure there’s absolutely no electricity going to it. Once that's resolved, you can cut the wires, cap them off, and then you can disassemble the unit if needed. You might even be able to scrap the metal for some cash!
