What Should I Look For When Buying a Used Jointer?

Hey everyone! I'm in the market for a used jointer and could use some advice on what to keep an eye out for. I'm based in north-west Ontario and have a few specific things in mind:
1. I want to make sure the fence is perfectly perpendicular to the table.
2. It's essential for the outfeed to move smoothly without any sticking.
3. The fence lock needs to be functioning properly.
4. I'm specifically looking for cast iron, so I hope to find one that isn't warped or twisted.

Additionally, I'm curious about any motor or belt-related issues I should check before making a purchase. Your tips would be super helpful!

Also, on the cost side, I'll need to figure in renting a van or truck from Home Depot, so I want to keep that in mind, too! Based on my research, the main things to remember are ensuring the fence is straight and running a demo piece through it—just because it turns on doesn't mean it works right! Thanks in advance!

Definitely make sure that the fence is straight, especially if you can get a cast iron one—that’s even better! Are you leaning towards a 6-inch or an 8-inch jointer?

Thanks for the advice! I remember seeing a post where the fence was twisted, so I'll be on high alert for that. Right now, I found an 8-inch General International jointer for $1250 CAD, which is way out of my budget. I'm actually looking at 6-inch models like General International, Rigid, and Delta, priced between $400 to $800 in my area. I’m okay with starting with a 6-inch since I won’t be working with really wide boards just yet as I’m just getting started.
