I'm gearing up to buy my first router but I'm feeling a bit overwhelmed. My local stores don't have a lot of options—just their own brand or a handful of similar machines all priced the same, and while I trust the staff, their goal is to sell. From what I've learned, there are three main types of routers: edge trim, fixed, and plunge. I think I'm after a fixed base or plunge router, not a trim router.
Here's what I'm considering:
- I want a single machine because my garage is tight on space. I'd prefer to invest a bit more in one versatile router over buying several different ones. It would be great if it can be mounted from below for a router table later on.
- I only have a few battery-powered tools (a screwdriver and a speaker), and I really like corded tools better, but if you think battery is the way to go, I'm open to hearing that.
I've seen the Bosch 1617 recommended a lot, but as I'm in Sweden, it doesn't work for me with our 230 V outlets. Some Bosch options available to me are the POF 1200 AE, POF 1400 ACE, and GOF 1250 CE. My local stores also have models like the RYOBI RRT1600-K, EINHELL TE-RO 1255 E, and HIKOKI M8V2. I'm looking for general advice on routers as well as specific suggestions.

I’ve owned a bunch of routers and honestly, the Bosch POF models offer great value. They’re versatile, work well with both 1/4" and 1/2" bits, and have a nice micro adjustment feature for precision. Plus, a lot of folks here can vouch for their performance! If you’re considering a Bosch, check out their user reviews—they’re pretty solid!
Go for a 2-1/4 HP combo kit! I’m a fan of Bosch, but honestly, pick whichever brand you like. I also typically lean towards corded routers, but you might find a decent battery option if you explore. If you're on a budget, Harbor Freight has some good kits that can get you started without breaking the bank.

I’ve got two Hercules 2-1/4 HP routers from Harbor Freight—one's even mounted in a table. They've been great! You get both a fixed and plunge base, and they perform surprisingly well for the price.
