What Should I Use to Tile Over My Brick Fireplace?

I'm planning to tile over my brick fireplace, and I'm not sure what kind of product I should provide for my contractor. Is Ardex AM100 smoothing mortar the right choice, or is there something better?

That fireplace looks awesome! Honestly, I wouldn't worry too much about which specific product to buy—your contractor will have a good idea of what to use. Just make sure they go over how they'll prep the brick, since that's super important for a lasting finish. Trust me, I learned that the hard way after my kitchen project!

Yeah, but I still have to buy all the materials myself.

I think you should go with All Set. I've used it for my backsplashes and shower tiles, and it's a solid all-around choice. It’s not the absolute best at anything, but it gets the job done nicely. I plan on using it for my brick fireplace too! Just grab about 3-4 bags; you can always return any leftovers.

After checking out your pic again, I noticed our raised hearth is similar—just about half the depth. I tiled my fireplace too, and I used cement board underneath for support. Just be warned: it creates a ton of brick dust, so cover everything up! Better safe than sorry.
