What Should We Do About Water Buildup in Our Dirt Crawl Space?

Hey everyone! We recently ran into an issue with our sump pump, which has left a sizeable puddle of water in our dirt crawl space. Normally, we don't have any moisture problems down there. I'm wondering if we can just let the water seep into the dirt and evaporate naturally? Would it work to set up a fan and a dehumidifier there to help dry it out, or could this lead to bigger problems down the line?

I think your first step should definitely be addressing that sump pump issue. If the pump isn’t working, that’s what’s causing the water to accumulate. Plus, you might want to consider putting down a 6mil polyethylene sheet on the dirt. It’s the code for unvented crawl spaces and only costs about $80—definitely worth it!

Setting up a dehumidifier is a solid idea, just remember to keep emptying it as the water collects. This can really help manage the humidity levels in your crawl space, plus it helps with drying things up in there. Just don’t forget the water that’s already pooled!
