What Should You Consider Before Closing Up After a Major Home Renovation?

I'm in the middle of renovating my townhome, and we've pretty much gutted the place—new ceilings, new floors, moving stairs around, and knocking down drywall. As we're getting ready to button everything back up, what are some important things I should think about before closing up the walls? Any advice or things I should definitely do while it's all exposed?

Definitely take lots of pictures before you seal everything up! It’ll make future fixes so much easier. I also suggest considering adding a receptacle near your toilet for a bidet, plus blocking between the studs for upper cabinets and towel racks can save you a hassle later.

Don’t forget to plan the placement of modern conveniences like smart home devices! It’s also a good idea to run CAT cables for internet. Consider installing conduit so you can easily swap out cables in the future without tearing up walls again. These details can really enhance your project!

Running conduit is a great idea! And honestly, who wouldn't love fast internet when binge-watching shows?

Make sure you’re adding soundproofing between walls and floors, especially if you share walls with neighbors. Also, it's smart to run low voltage wiring for future tech needs, even if you don't use it right away. And while you’re at it, double-check that all your ducting is sealed well and consider zoning for your HVAC if your place has multiple floors.

From my experience, insulation is key! I recommend using spray foam for better energy efficiency. Also, make sure to upgrade your electrical system—adding extra outlets, especially with USB ports, is super helpful. Don’t forget about the plumbing; consider using PEX pipes because they're more flexible and less prone to leaks. While you’re at it, plan for things like soundproofing and hidden storage—those will be lifesavers later on!

This is solid advice! I totally agree, thinking ahead about these elements can save you a lot of trouble down the line.

I recommend investing in good quality cabinets instead of going cheap. We made that mistake and now deal with flimsy drawers that can’t hold heavy cookware. Also, when planning your kitchen layout, think about outlet placement to keep them functional and hidden when possible!

Absolutely! I've had a similar experience. IKEA cabinets can be a lifesaver for budget-friendly yet solid build options.
