I'm a newbie trying to create my first soil mix, and I'm a bit confused about the sizes of crushed granite and pumice. I've read some resources, but when I went to buy them, I noticed there are various sizes for each type of rock. What's the ideal size I should be looking for? I want to avoid using perlite since it tends to make a mess, and I often mistake the debris for pests on my plants!

I recommend using 1/4" sized pumice if you can find it. I typically go for Navajo brand which comes in 50lb bags for around $40. Just a heads up, depending on your location, it might be hard to locate. Crushed granite is easier to find at larger home improvement stores but remember to wash it thoroughly; the fine particles can create a cement-like texture when wet! Also, chicken grit from feed stores is a budget-friendly option that works well too!
Great question! For soil mixes, 1/4” is generally the size you're looking for when it comes to grit additives. It's often the sweet spot for drainage without being too chunky.

Ahhh thank you for this guidance! I appreciate this info so much because I definitely would have made some concrete without it.
