What Size Should Hedgehog Holes Be for Fencing?

I'm in the process of fencing my vegetable garden to prevent wild pigs and roe deer from getting in, but I want to make sure hedgehogs can still come and go freely. I've heard that the standard size for hedgehog holes is 13cm, but does that mean they need to be 13cm wide and 13cm tall? Also, do you think they could squeeze through smaller holes, like 10cm? I'm looking at some affordable farm fencing options which have 10cm, 15cm, and 20cm spacing between the wires. I'm a bit worried that the larger spacing might allow weaned pigs to sneak in, but I really want to accommodate the hedgehogs as well.

You’re right about the 13cm size, but I’ve heard that lots of hedgehogs can fit through smaller openings too, like 10x10cm. It really varies based on the size of the hedgehog. If they’re adventurous, they might surprise you!

If you go with 10cm squared for the fencing, you can actually stretch that into a round hole which would be around 12.7cm if you do the math right. That should work for hedgehogs and give them a bit more room!

Oh, that’s a great point! I didn’t consider that! Thanks for the tip!
