Hey everyone! I'm just starting out in electronics and I'm eager to move beyond just sketching circuits on paper. I've been diving into topics like voltage regulators and clipper circuits in my textbooks. I'm also interested in programming a microcontroller. Can anyone recommend what components and tools I should purchase for various projects? Additionally, how can I safely give my circuits an AC power supply at home? Just a heads-up—my budget is tight, so please skip the pricey bench power supply (I can access one at my college lab).

One of the best ways to build up your components without breaking the bank is to salvage parts from old electronics. Just get your hands on some busted devices and see what you can salvage! As for basics, I'd recommend getting a breadboard, some jumper wires, a selection of resistors, capacitors, and a few LEDs. If you want to get into microcontrollers, an Arduino is a great starting point. You don’t necessarily need both an Arduino and a Raspberry Pi unless you have specific projects in mind—stick with one to start and then expand later. Honestly, off-brand Arduinos can work fine too as long as they fit your project needs!

Good to know about the off-brands! I was hesitant about those but maybe I'll give them a shot. What about specific brands for basic components?
