What Thickness of Wood Should I Order for 6×6 Posts?

Hey everyone! I'm pretty new to woodworking and mostly use hand tools. I'm about to kick off my first big project and I need several long 6x6 posts. I'm wondering what thickness I should order so that I can plane it down to 6x6. Any advice would be super helpful!

For your 6x6, if you’re not laminating, I suggest looking for actual 6x6 fence posts. They can often be easier to find and shouldn't need much work. But if you want to build it up, consider laminating. You could use three 2x6 boards to get a 6x5.5 post or three 2x8s for a larger piece.

A good tip is to laminate three 2x8 boards together. That way, you'd get a 7.25x6 post that you can cut down to your desired size of 6x6. Just make sure to think about the final look and grain orientation when you laminate.
